Earthquake Hazards and Engineering

In Soils and Liquefaction, students experiment with different soils to determine what soil they think will best resist earthquakes and flooding, thus keeping their model “house” safe from catastrophe. San Francisco Bay vs. Greater Boston is an examination of surface geology, liquefaction risk, faults, and earthquake intensity maps to compare and contrast hazards and explanatory theories of earthquakes. Finally, in Design and Build Earthquake Resistant Building, students are challenged to research, design and build working models of buildings that can withstand a simulated earthquake.
